Our Story A Family Home

The Ambers at Port Stephens is all about family. Built in 1989 by Matt and Catherine Bliss, it began as a place for their children to roam, grow, and play. Over the years, it became more than just a home—it became the heart of family life, filled with laughter, love, and a steady stream of friends and neighbours. It has always been a place where memories are made, and everyone feels welcome.

Matt and Catherine’s journey to Port Stephens reflects their humble beginnings in small country towns. They poured their energy into building several successful businesses in the construction industry, creating a life full of opportunities for their family. For them, success has always been about more than work—it’s about family, friends, and community.

Selling the home was never an option; too many memories lived within its walls. As their family grew, it became one of the few places large enough to comfortably accommodate all 23 of them, including 13 grandchildren!

When maintaining the property became too challenging, their children—now working in design and construction—took on the task of restoring and reimagining it, keeping the spirit of family at its heart.

Set across five private acres, The Ambers balances nostalgia with modern comfort, offering a unique blend of relaxation and activity. We look forward to welcoming guests to experience the same joy, togetherness, and fun that have made this place special for generations.

Naming The Ambers

Originally called ‘Enlainey,’ a blend of the last two letters of each of their four children’s names, the property has since been reimagined and renamed The Ambers at Port Stephens, inspired by the 49 Liquidambar trees Catherine planted along the driveway while eight months pregnant with their third child.

The new name honours the hard work and dedication Matt and Catherine invested in designing, building, and landscaping the original property, celebrating the legacy they’ve created for generations to come.

Behind the Design

The Ambers was a true collaborative effort, with the entire family working closely together alongside the design team to bring the vision to life.

Leading the project, Kain Bliss and the team at Greenbuild Constructions managed every aspect of the build with exceptional attention to detail. As a full-service company, Greenbuild’s in-house architecture team carefully crafted the structural elements, while their skilled joinery team Bliss Kitchens & Joinery created bespoke fittings that seamlessly complemented the design. Their expertise ensured that every component of the project, from the foundations to the final finishes, was executed with precision and care. Designers, Lauren Charge and Jenn Bliss drew on their extensive experience across renovation & design to manage all selections and styling details. Thoughtfully balancing aesthetics with functionality, they chose materials, finishes, and furnishings that reflect the spirit of The Ambers, a playful yet sophisticated retreat.

Together, the collaborative effort between the design team awith the support of the entire family has created a retreat where guests can unwind, connect, and make lasting memories in a space that feels as comfortable as it is inspiring.
